Hollinger: U.S. team needs a full-time coach
SI.com Aug 30 2004
"First, let's dispel two popular myths about the American squad: They didn't care and they didn't know how to share the ball. The guys who didn't care were the ones who chose to stay in the States. As for not sharing the ball, the U.S. led all teams in assists at these Olympics by a wide margin."

When the U.S. wasn't watching, basketball's world changed
USA Today Aug 27 2004
One player seemed to see the problem clearly Friday. Allen Iverson, patriot. Sending a message to the troops who stayed home.
"Any person that's selected to a team like this, it shouldn't be a question in your mind. It shouldn't even be something you think about," he said. "You honestly get a chance to represent your country, and what's better than that?
"As far as anybody that grew up in the U.S. and able to be a basketball player in the NBA, you understand the things that that country has done for you and your family, and gave you an opportunity to be able to support your family and be recognized as a household name.
"So, I mean it's just an honor to do be able to do something like that. And I would advise anybody that's selected to a team like this to take that honor and cherish it."

Artest explains absence: politics
Indianapolis Star Aug 25 2004
And what would have happened if Artest were on the team?
"There would be a lot of people being locked down; that's it," he said. "That Puerto Rican guard (Carlos Arroyo, who scored 24 points in a 92-73 victory over the U.S. team) would have been locked down. I would have locked down everybody. That's what would have happened."
"I'm definitely looking forward to 2008, 2012 and every other year," he said. "It's the biggest tournament in the world. There's nothing bigger than the Olympics."

Dream Team stopped by Lithuania 94-90
Foxsports.com Aug 21 2004
In a league filling up with foreigners, the NBA missed one who was right in their own back yard, playing at Maryland.
"I was a free agent in Europe, and it never came - any offers. They talked about they were interested, but there weren't even any minimum offers," Jasikevicius said. "So I think I'm just not a player for the NBA, because these guys know what they're doing.
"If 30 teams think a player cannot play, I cannot play."
